James J. Jeffries was the undefeated World Heavyweight Champion when he retired from the ring in 1905. These photos chronicle much of Jeffries' boxing career as one of the most famous boxers of all-time. Jeffries had never even been knocked down in his prime. After Jack Johnson, an African American, became the World Heavyweight Champion in 1908, Jeffries was repeatedly urged to come out of retirement as "The Great White Hope" to defeat Johnson. In a battle termed "The Fight of the Century," Jeffries fought against Johnson for the World Heavyweight crown on July 4, 1910, in Reno, Nevada. Jeffries had been retired for over five years, and he lost an astounding 110 pounds to get back to his fighting weight of 226 pounds. The temperature at the start of the fight was 110 degrees Fahrenheit, and the out-of-shape Jefferies was no match for Johnson - who defeated Jefferies on a TKO after 15 rounds. These photos depict Jeffries both in-and-out of the ring. Many show him in training camps and are quite informal. Most of the photos would be Type I if they were submitted to PSA. About a quarter of them are Type III and IV. A few of the photos show tears and folds. Overall, the photos are around Very Good condition.
