On July 4, 1939, the New York Yankees held Lou Gehrig Appreciation day at Yankee Stadium. The ailing Gehrig that day gave the speech most remembered in baseball history, a speech that included the immortal words, "luckiest man on the face of the earth." On June 2, 1941, Gehrig succumbed to what is now known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The Yankees scheduled a Lou Gehrig Memorial at their game scheduled for July 4th. that season, but the game was rained out, and the Memorial and game took place on July 6, 1941. The 2.5x3.25" ticket and rain check are intact and still attached to each other. The ticket features a small black & white photo of Gehrig and the words "Lou Gehrig Memorial - July 4, 1941". Hall of Famer Gehrig held the MLB consecutive games streak at 2,130 that only ended because of symptoms of his ALS disease and was not broken until Cal Ripken, Jr. exceeded Gehrig's record with a streak of 2,632 games that ended on September 19, 1998. The ticket and rain check are encapsulated by PSA and are graded by PSA as VG 3.
