Original
glass plate negative of Philadelphia A’s pitcher Chief Bender. The image
captures Bender warming up on the sideline prior to a game. Bender’s last name
is etched along the side. Bender played with the A’s from 1903 to 1914, but the
uniform style shown here, especially the pillbox cap, was used by A’s only between
the years 1909 to 1914. Bender won 109 games and three World Championships with
the club during that six-year span. He finished his career with 212 wins and a
2.46 lifetime ERA. The negative (7x5”) displays minor flaws along the
periphery, as well as a few scratches in the central image. VG. Culled from the
legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive.
