Glass plate negative capturing Wilbur Wright in his historic flight around the Statue of Liberty in 1909. The image captures Wright’s plane in the air, with the Statue of Liberty pictured in the distance. As reported in the New York Times, thousands gathered on both shores of the Hudson to watch the five-minute flight, which saw Wright circle Lady Liberty as he flew from Governor’s Island to Beloe’s Island (now called Liberty Island) and then back again. While we have seen many photos of Wright in flight next to the Statue of Liberty, we have never seen this image before and it may be unique. The negative (7x5”) displays minor flaws, mainly along the periphery, but the central image is largely unaffected. VG. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive.
