Even the Greek version of Alexander the Great had to get started somewhere, which turned out to be Persia, but the baseball Alexander the Great picked Philadelphia. The B&W photo (7x7.87") shows the future Hall of Famer, with lots of boyish freckles, although he's not all that young at 24. How's this for a rookie season? With a mediocre Philadelphia club, and playing at bandbox Baker Bowl, Alexander started 37 games and finished 31 of them, pitching 367 innings. But "Pete" didn't just pitch a lot, he pitched superbly, going 28-13 with a 2.57 ERA. They didn't have a "Rookie of the Year" award in 1911 or a Cy Young Award, but if they did, Grover Cleveland Alexander had a good shot for both. Photo not in the best of condition. Type I.
