The very fact that Stan Musial played in St. Louis and not New York, Boston, or Los Angeles is probably the primary reason that he never received the national attention that was bestowed on his contemporaries DiMaggio, Williams, Mantle, and Mays. But truth be told, he was as good as any of the aforementioned and the record of history is crystal clear; Musial’s staggering on-field accomplishments and his personal comportment scream sustained excellence. Stan the Man was a twenty-four-time All-Star, seven-time batting champion, three-time league MVP, and three-time World Series champion. He finished in the top ten in MVP voting an incredible fourteen times and his career MVP shares are second to only Barry Bonds. On offer here is Musial’s flannel home jersey and pants from the 1957 season when he recorded a league high .351 average and .422 on-base percentage to go with twenty-nine homers and 102 RBI. The seven button-down front is completely original with “Cardinals” embroidered across the chest in red/gold/black and “6” on the verso, all sewn-on in red on midnight navy felt. Tagging in the outer tail includes a “Rawlings ‘Hall of Fame’ Flannel” manufacturer’s tag, “44” size tag, and “Musial 57 X” in red chain-link. The inner tail maintains a washing label and a “Set 1 1957” flap tag. Matching pants feature red piping down the legs with the following tags in the waist: Rawlings manufacturer’s tag, “36” size tag, washing label, “Set 1 1957” flap tag, and white felt swatch with Musial scripted in red chain-link. Provenance: This complete uniform came directly from Bob Broeg’s estate and comes with a signed letter of provenance from his daughter. A former editor at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and The Sporting News, and a member of the Hall of Fame Committee on Baseball Veterans, Hall of Famer writer Bob Broeg also authored the sobriquet “Stan The Man.” This is a museum quality specimen of a first tier Hall of Famer with impeccable provenance. As such, it is worthy of the most discerning baseball collects and one of the finest Musial gamers ever offered at public sale. IMPORTANT NOTE: We believe that this jersey was worn by Stan Musial in the 1957 All Star Game in St. Louis for several reasons. It is an extra shirt with the "57X" embroidered in the tail meaning the Cardinals produced specially in addition to his normal ration of two shirts for home. This is normally reserved for playoffs and World Series, but with the showcase All Star Game at home they would want their star to look his best. Besides, this was the one and only uniform that Stan gave to his compatriot Bob Broeg and it would have to have been a good one. Especially one not all jacked up from the wear and tear of the game. As Musial and all jerseys go this is simply an elegant and gorgeous uniform worthy of a BFF.
