EXTREMELY unusual for the check to be going "To" the Yankees rather than vice versa. Only one we have on record. The check is written out to "NY American League Base Ball Club". It is interesting that Ruth wrote "Base Ball" as two words, attesting to how far back in the game he goes - back to the days when the sport was spelled as two words. It has been suggested that this check, dated September 16, 1942, was for World Series tickets that year, as the Yankees played the St. Louis Cardinals. If so, Ruth would have ordered a large quantity of ducats, since the check was for nearly a thousand dollars. Ruth, who threw and batted left-handed, wrote right-handed, and his neat signature clearly shows the slants of his right-handed script. The signature on the check reads "G H Ruth", for the Babe's given name of George Herman Ruth. From the estate of Joe Bihler, the right hand man of Babe Ruth's agent, Christy Walsh, and in turn, Ruth himself.
