This reflective, 1-page handwritten note, dated May 5th, 1973, provides Shawkey's opinion of the Sultan of Swat.  "My opinion of Babe Ruth is that he was one of the best left hand pitchers of all time...".  Shawkey, would know.  He was the rookie manager at the time of Ruth's amazing, second-to-last full game outing... as a pitcher (1930).  Shawkey handed Ruth the orb in the last game of the season versus his former team, the Red Sox, and proceeded to pitch 9 innings and a 9-3 win.

The former Philadelphia Athletics hurler wasn't just impressed by Ruth's pitching prowess, however.  He goes on to note, "...Babe Ruth is... the longest long ball hitter there ever was and if any one ties his home run record it will be in more games than the Babe."

Shawkey finishes his comments with Ruth's personal qualities writing, "he was a great fellow loved the game and his team mates and young stars he always helped them a very lovable man."  He signs off "Bob" Shawkey.

Letter has minor fold creasing o/w NRMT in clear blue pen.
