The signatures on this gem of a baseball were compiled at a 1938 Press Club Dinner that featured numerous marquee attendees. Chief among the signers are Babe Ruth, who had retired three years prior but whose clout in the sport remained second to none, and Joe DiMaggio, who was an emergent star for the Yankees in a post-Ruth landscape. The time was a critical juncture in Yankee history. Though Ruth had initially passed the mantle to Lou Gehrig, it would be DiMaggio who would become the face of the franchise for the coming years as Gehrig would be forced to retire in 1939 due to the disease that now bears his name. This OAL Harridge ball, signed on January 29 at the Ambassador Hotel in NYC, features bold labels with "1/29/38" handwritten on a panel in an unknown hand. Ruth's name appears on the sweet spot, with DiMaggio, Kenesaw Landis, Casey Stengel, Frank Frisch, Herb Pennock, Jimmy Braddock, Joe Medwick, Ford Frick, Joe Cronin, Joe Dugan, Bill Terry and more gracing the rest of the ball. The signatures average 7/10, and though the ball has a light coat of shellac it is rated EX+. Comes with PSA & JSA LOA, as well as an LOA from the original owner, who snuck into the dinner with a friend to obtain the signatures.
