Long before winning the 1957 Indy 500, Sam Hanks was a big name in the midget car circuit. This metal ashtray trophy is from Hanks' victory in the 1940 Rose Bowl Classic. There are marks in the tray from when Sam smoked cigars, a Dodge Inc Trophies stamp underneath, and the outside rim is engraved "Stanyer & Edmonson, Rose Bowl Classic" with race car driver in middle. Comes with LOA from Sam's wife, Alice Hanks, to Don, confirming this was Sam's and that the marks inside the tray were from Sam's cigars. Also included are two Sam Hanks signed pieces of stationery and a photo of Hanks with this exact trophy.
