After his career as a race car driver, Eddie Rickenbacker attained fame as the top Flying Ace in World War I. This small 4" metal piece is an actual fragment from the Eastern Airlines plane which crashed with Rickenbacker aboard in 1941. The back has handwritten "Feb. 27-1941, New York to Atlanta, E.A.L, FF 21, Morrow GA," with front written "Eddie Rickenbacker Aboard" and "Killed," which is incorrect. The American hero had severe injuries and was assumed dead, but he wasn't. Included in the lot is a "Rickenbacker" car plate.
