Extensive, complete and unbelievably rare, this collection of figural, unique entry badges to the Coney Island Jockey Club from come the first year it was in operation in 1880. The racetrack was built by a group of horse racing aficionados from the New York City area who formed the Coney Island Jockey Club in 1879, and built the Sheepshead Bay Race Track, led by Leonard Jerome and the track's President, William Kissam Vanderbilt, and of course, August Belmont. These large cardboard badges (22 in total) are all luscious in color, strikingly beautiful. Tickets are more pedestrian (six in total). The condition is beautiful overall and mostly NRMT. The date of issuance is from the opening day of the Sheepshead Bay Race Track in 1880 thru 1891 with one undated badge no later than 1910. They include: For the early 1880s: the grandstand paddock, betting stand and field for the 1880 entire fall meeting, 1881 badge for the 12th & last day (string) featuring Hindoo's loss to Glenmore and an 1881 entire fall meeting badge (missing string). For 1886: ladies tickets (3), grandstand, quarter stretch & saddling paddock badges (4), Jockey Club House entry (2), and field enclosure ticket. For 1890: A Jockey Club House entry badge for entire June meeting, club house admission for specific days (3), grand stand, quarter stretch & saddling paddock badges (2), private box pass for June, an unusual restaurant badge for the June meeting, a gateman's box ticket, and privilege badge for autumn meet (vendor’s pass). For 1891: grandstand, quarter stretch & saddling paddock badges for both the opening day of the June meeting - coupon attached with number 1, and day eleven of the meet with coupon number 11 attached, and restaurant badges for June meeting (2). Also, grandstand badge with no date but can be no later than 1910 when the track closed. Included in the 1890 collection are two clubhouse and one grandstand Quarter stretch & saddling paddock passes (three total) representing race days that superstars Salvator & Firenze raced on several occasions during the meeting.
