Created in the 1920s, this magnificent delicate composition boudoir doll bears a striking image and likeness to Josephine Baker; the doll is just under three feet long and was meant to sit coquettishly on a flapper's day bed. Josephine had the looks of a black angel and the soul of a heroic fighter. She was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, Zouzou (1934), and to become a world-famous entertainer. Baker refused to perform for segregated audiences in the United States, fought for civil rights the US, and assisted the French Resistance during World War II. This doll looks just like her, is made of composition but is very similar to bisque, the face is stunning, and the arms and legs are elongated and elegant. The body is a stuffed cotton and linen, the make-up is original, the finger nails and lips are painted red. There is minor crazing to the legs, which is very common, and a bit of missing paint on the cheek. The off-the-shoulder dress is made of cotton, sunflower yellow with gold trim and gold shoes. She is wearing her original necklace and nothing is missing. Overall condition is EX+.
