Joe Louis was also an important figure during World War II. Louis fought a charity bout for the Navy Relief Society against former opponent Buddy Baer on January 9, 1942, which generated $47,000 for the fund. The next day, he volunteered to enlist as a private in the United States Army. When asked about his decision to enter the racially-segregated U.S. Army, Louis' explanation was simple: "Lots of things wrong with America, but Hitler ain't going to fix them." Here is a rare, one sheet paper, original recruiting poster issued in 1942 by the U.S. Government Printing Office. It pictures Louis with rifle in hand. Bold color and sharp image, it has been professionally framed and while the original fold lines are faintly evident, it has no tears. Measuring 28x39.5", this is the rarer one-sheet version of this poster.
