America's infatuation with the small horse called Seabiscuit was engineered by Charles S. Howard, the man who bought the legendary nag for $8,000 in 1936 and relentlessly promoted it to the nation's press. The indomitable horse with, in Grantland Rice's words, "the heart of a lion and the flying feet of a gazelle" did the rest, earning $437,000 and beating War Admiral mano a mano, or hoof to hoof, at Pimlico on November 1, 1938, in "the greatest horse race ever." Howard signed this great photo of a regal-looking Seabiscuit with jockey Johnny "Red" Pollard up, "To Rodrick Williams from Charles S. Howard" in ink, signature rating an 8/10. The 8x10 photo has some light browning along the edges but overall is EX.
