Howard, the man who bought the legendary nag for $8,000 in 1936 and relentlessly promoted it to the nation's press. The indomitable horse with, in Grantland Rice's words, "the heart of a lion and the flying feet of a gazelle" did the rest, earning $437,000 and beating War Admiral mano a mano, or hoof to hoof, at Pimlico on November 1, 1938, in "the greatest horse race ever."
