His brother, Phil, was the more famous Niekro, being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997, but Joe Niekro was no slouch in the majors himself, pitching an impressive 22 seasons, primarily with the Houston Astros between 1975 and 1985. He began his career with the Chicago Cubs in 1967, and wore this stunning all-original flannel home jersey with the number 48 on the back. Among the features are pinstripes, a Cubs Patch on the left sleeve and the one-year Illinois Sesquicentennial patch on the right. The flannel shows heavy game use from the 177 innings he pitched that campaign, which saw him go 14-10 for a team that went 84-78 in the last year before divisional play became the norm in the majors. Though primarily a fastball/slider pitcher in his early days, Joe eventually followed in his older brother's footsteps and developed the knuckleball their father had taught the two boys.
