The 1938 Cardinals weren't much on the field with a 71-80 record, but they shared one thing with that year’s Yankees team that would sweep the Cubs n the World Series. Both of those clubs featured Babe Ruth's signature on a team-signed baseball. We're not exactly sure why The Bambino's autograph sits alongside those of Ducky Medwick, Pepper Martin, and Mickey Owen - perhaps he was in town on a later date than the April 28 inscription and he signed the ball then. Whatever the backstory, this official ball is signed by Ruth on the side panel along with a dozen members of the Redbirds. The ball is deeply toned, with the signatures rating between 2 and 8 with Ruth's being the boldest. The ball has a “Forbes Field 4/28/1938” inscription on a side Panel and St Louis was in town that day. The Yankees' first trip to St. Louis to play the Browns was three weeks later.
