He was the lead-off batter for the unstoppable Murderer's Row, and lives forever in Cooperstown beside such teammates as Ruth and Gehrig. This Official Ban Johnson baseball is the very one he took home with him following the season con-sidered to be the greatest in baseball history. It was acquired by Barry Halper from Combs' son in the late 1980's, and includes documentation to this effect. The ball itself is just glorious, with a full twenty-seven signatures, none falling below 7/10. The Ruth is secretarial, but all the others are 100% genuine: Combs, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Hoyt, Meusel, Shocker, Huggins, Pennock and more. Sweet spot notation reads, "Worlds '1928' Champs," but this sort of inscription was commonly found, and understood to mean that they were reigning Champs during the following season. Definitive proof of the 1927 vintage is offered by the appearance of Julie Wera's signature on the ball, who was with the Yanks only in 1927 (and very briefly in 1929, when Urban Shocker was already gone). Certainly among the strongest specimens of this most desirable team ball on earth, and with the Combs connection it's practically priceless.
