Quite a find, this collection of fourteen German and Venezuelan jazz posters from the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Artwork that craves framing and proper presentation, with evocative designs from those heady jazz days of innovation and attitude. Deliciously bold and coolly hip, the German jazz posters (circa late 1950’s and early 60’s) highlight the legendary work of poster artists Michel + Kieser of Novum, where on the large (47x33”) 1958 and 1960 posters for an annual “Jazz Festival”, a cacophony of brass imagery mixes with melancholic blues and fiery reds, to announce (with help from the German public broadcasting agency, “Hessischer Runfunk”; translation: Hessian Broadcasting) the offering of numerous jazz bands over the last week of May. Three smaller (33x22”) German posters present 1) the Modern Jazz Quartet with M+K photogram of random objects upon tranquil blue color; 2) Germany's own Joki Freund Quintett, red type on black and white abstract design; and 3) Wild Bill Davison and the Dixieland All Stars, all in violet with turn of the century imagery. The smallish (average 17x23”) Venezuelan posters include 1) two of the same violet in color Elvin Jones Quintet posters; 2) one pastel green ad for the “Grupo de Percusion del Conservatorio J.J. Landaeta” on June 19, 1976; and lastly, 3) six of the same coral orange poster adverts for the Caracas Jazz Club. All EX, as the 1958 German "Jazz Festival" poster contains a longish tear (roughly 11 inches, at bottom) that is neatly taped and not unseemly.
