Absolutely stunning "classic" image of the great Jack Johnson. He is standing with honest impunity as he does to this day. Fabulous Underwood and Underwood image is exceptional quality on this gorgeous heavy stock. Vintage 1915 image even has the original paper caption on verso, which explains how Johnson, who is about to participate in the famed April 5th legendary fight with Jess Willard, "is simply sure of victory" and "expects to enter the ring in the pink of condition." The look on Johnson's face is smoldering, as if he is toiling with his sentence of having to throw the fight to stay out of prison. He was undefeated up until his loss to Willard, and the debate has gone on forever as to whether he threw the fight (as was written by The Big Smoke himself in a 1916 admission) or was legitimately beaten (making his 5-page confession a saving-face lie). So, much can be read into this pre-fight photo! Image is perfect, EX-MT, dated April 1, 1915, and measures 7 ? x 8 ?”.
