One of the most valuable ball players that ever wore the uniform of the Giants--George Burns. This silent and self-effacing pool shark was the leadoff man who made the New York Giants offense go. He had a special knack for playing the Polo Grounds’ notorious sun field in left, and was beloved by the bleacher rooters that knew left field as “Burnsville.” Two EX-MT photos of the beloved Burns, one (5 X 7”) with Burns having just completed a practice swing, obviously for the cameras, in front of a mostly empty stadium, taken on Aug. 10, 1922. The other pic (4 X 6”) features Burns having just tossed the ball to a teammate, in front of the expensive box seats, in Sept. of 1917.
