John Lennon was an artist but this piece is a tad outside of his normal arena of expertise: music. He also loved to put pen to paper and John, being John, had a penchant for the erotic side. In 1969-70, John and Yoko were embarking on their trip of red hot passion. He felt sexually liberated by his new romance and it moved him to draw erotic renditions of his sex life with Yoko. He named the collection of 14 drawings “Bag One, The Erotic Lithographs.” They remained part of John and Yoko’s private property until 5 years after Lennon’s tragic death. At that time Yoko announced that she was “keeping a silent promise to share John’s love with the rest of the world and she began producing a series of prints from John’s original artwork. The print carries the notation “H.C. XXVIII/VL” (28/45) in the lower left hand corner and is signed with a flourish by John. The entire set of prints was brought to the Crommylynck Brothers (Picasso’s personal printmakers) who oversaw production. The American opening of Bag One took place at Lee Nordness Gallery in NYC. The first exhibition of Lennon’s work was at the London Arts Gallery in January 1970, but on the second day of the exhibition it was raided and the artwork was confiscated as “obscene.” 30 X 23” and on heavy white stock.
