…But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas? - President Kennedy talking about the space program. In the 60’s, America got space crazy. The race was on with the Soviet Union to “conquer” space and all Americans followed the program closely. The fascination led to the issuing of NASA space program cards in 1963 by Topps. Here we have almost a complete set of these cards and the front sheet of a vending machine from where you could purchase them. Sheet has short bios of America’s first astronauts and is 7-1/4 X 19-1/2”. On the front of each card is a photo of either astronauts or NASA training. On the reverse, 3D drawings that can only be viewed by special glasses and they’re included with this lot. Cards show Glenn, Carpenter, Cooper, Grissom, Schirra and Slayton in action. This is the right stuff.
