Purest Victoriania! An oversize 1888 albumen photograph presents a cute baby in lace diapers wearing a catcher’s mask and gripping a baseball with both hands. The youngster stands on a sculpted pedestal with “Moe” in script, set in front of a period home. Foreground detail is quite remarkable, typical of the view cameras used at the time. Appearing at the lower right corner is “Copyright 1888 / F.W. Guerin”; noted photographer Fitz W. Guerin had a studio in St. Louis from c. 1877 to c. 1900. Image size is 15 1/2” x 19 1/2”, and the photograph is framed and mounted under glass, with an overall dimension of 22 1/4” x 26 1/2”. Condition is quite nice overall, marred by a bit of chemical action at the extreme lower corners, and a tack hole and small scratches on the infant’s arm. Some surface scaling is found on the frame.
