This brings alive the American folk song Camptown Races if anything ever did. Stunning fullest color lithograph of the sport of kings bubbles to the surface with action. Killer African American jockey brings an added historical perspective in this stereotype from the most commercial American printmaker of its time, Currier & Ives. Entitled “Great Horses In A Great Race” this marvelous image is in EX-MT condition (print itself). Underneath the title it reads “The Finish In The Great Match Race For $ 5.000. A Side And $ 5.000. Added Money One Mile And A Quarter...At Sheepshead Bay, N.Y. June 25th 1890...Between Salvator And Teeny. J.B. Haggin’s Ch. c. Salvator by Prince Charlie Murphy...1. D.T. Pulsifer’s B.c. Tenny by Rayon d’Or...Garrison 2. Won By A Neck Only...Time 2:05” The manufacturer’s mark reads, “Published by Currier & Ives” on the left bottom and “Copyright 1891 By Currier & Ives, N.Y.” and is artist signed “J. Cameron.” Folio sized print is 33 x 24” and in a corker of an old frame. The best.
