And down the stretch they come. Seattle Slew’s story is a reminder that the science of breeding horses is not foolproof. Millionaires spend their millions to breed and race Kentucky Derby hopefuls but in 1975 a group of friends put together $17,500 to purchase Seattle Slew as a yearling and watched him win a Triple Crown and establish himself as one of the leading sires of the final quarter of the 20th century. Seattle Slew went off as the 1-to-2 favorite in the Kentucky Derby but disaster nearly struck at the start when he swerved and was sharply taken up by jockey Jean Cruguet. At the end it did not matter. Slew cruised home a 1-3/4-length winner anyway. He then took the next two legs of the Triple Crown and galloped into history. This is a training saddle worn by Seattle Slew in his Triple Crown year and it’s signed by his jockey Jean Cruguet. Saddle sits on a barrel marked “Barrel of Money.” On the front face of the barrel is a photo of Slew taking the lead on the final turn. The photo is sealed in plastic and attached to the barrel. Comes with the official program on the day he captured the roses at Churchill Downs.
