He may have been mortally ill, but the pride and courage etched in the Iron Horse’s weary, gray-templed face in this compelling, original International News wire photo makes that seemingly stone-carved face look like it should be on Mount Rushmore. 6.5 x 8.5” shot of Gehrig sitting in his locker in his pinstriped Yankee uniform with a Baseball Centennial patch on his left sleeve and his cap on a peg behind him was published after the 1939 season when he retired due to the terminal illness ALS. Back has the date “11/11/39” handwritten in pencil, the slug line “Gehrig hangs up his hat”, catalogue number “888130” and a gray International stamping. Splendid photo is EX+ w/very mild corner bending and a tiny speck along the lower left edge.
