One of the most unique of Bobby Jones photos is this vintage late ‘30s shot of arguably the greatest golfer of all time in a rare carefree moment. Jones is seen smiling as he sits on a fairway clad in his ever-present cardigan and toe-toned shoes, arms folded over his knees, putter resting between his knees. A far different personality than most gold galleries saw in his brief but peerless reign from 1923 to his premature retirement in 1930. Then, the frail-looking Jones was a chain-smoking wreck who shied away from crowds and was so nervous he couldn’t eat during tournaments. Nervous or not, he won 13 national championships in 8 years, even though he only played 3 months a year, spending most of his time acquiring degrees in law, English Lit and mechanical engineering. When he retired, he set up his own law practice in Atlanta, while also designing Augusta National and creating the Masters tournament.
