A Maple Leaf scout once predicted that Red Kelly, with his temper and irascible attitude, would never play more than 20 games in the NHL, and he would bet a hat on it. Well, we don’t know if Red ever got that fedora but the scout was merely 1,296 games off. Kelly, whose hair matched his fiery style of play, actually had two careers. The 1st was the 6-time All-Star, 3-time Lady Byng winner, 1st recipient of the Norris Trophy as the league’s outstanding defenseman, and captain of the Red Wings whom he led to 3 Stanley Cups. The 2nd was as the high-scoring center for the Maple Leafs (whom he jumped to after getting into a snit with the Red Wings management) and winning 4 more Cups. Kelly wielded this Northland stick in ‘58-59 when he routinely carried the puck up ice to lead the attack (and perhaps to carve up some enemy puck-carriers as well). The lumber is 53” from taped knob to the L of the taped blade -- and contains the signatures of Kelly and 18 other ‘58-59 Red Wings, including Terry Sawchuk, Alex Delvecchio and Marcel Pronovost, on the shaft! “Kelly” is stamped midway down on one side with the number “4” handwritten higher up. “Lippman’s Tool Shop, Detroit, Michigan” stamped under the signatures. Extensive markings of use, mainly around the blade, something de rigueur on a Red Kelly stanchion, but otherwise uncracked, unchipped, original and unbeatable. Like Red.
