The Madness began here, on March 27, 1939 when Oregon met Ohio State at Northwestern University's Patten Gymnasium for the first-ever NCAA Basketball Championship. As this hellaciously rare program attests, the game -- won by Oregon 46-33 -- had little of the "hoop"-la of today's climactic game, and resulted not from a "Sweet 16" but from 1 team each from the NCAA's 8 districts playing in an eastern and western tournament, with the winners meeting for all the marbles. Simple 4-page program (6 x 9") has no players or coaches on the cover but a shot of the gym, with the centerfold pages listing the rosters and a team picture of each squad (with coaches unnamed). NRMT with a few unobtrusive specks on the cover and a light fold.
