In a letter dated December 10, 1820 to Monsieur Baudlin, with whom Lafayette was in correspondence with regarding farming matters, he refers to the death of his sone-in-law, Louis de Lasteyrie, who married Lafayette’s daughter, Virginie. The fountain ink is still bold, grading an “8” out of a possible 10. Letter itself is EX+. Roughly translates, “Since I haven’t given you any news from me my dear captain, your friends have endured big misfortunes. All of my family has been deeply affected by this…was sick for 2 months, devotion of wife and 4 children-even with the best care they could not prolong his life that was so dear to him. I am taking today his daughter and her children to Paris to meet an uncle of her husband who is the older brother of Charles. In the misery, uncle, 84 years old could not make the funeral because of his misery. I will be back in a few days and stay until the month of January…because he will spend the rest of the winter in the city. This terrible circumstance…” Matted in frame next to an image of Lafayette. Display measures 18x14”.
