Famous photo taken on April 23, 1921 in New Brunswick, N.J. in celebration of a new RCA transatlantic broadcasting station. Present at the event were scientists and corporate heads from RCA, GE and AT&T including at center Charles Steinmetz (this “giant” of AC current was only four feet tall but whose middle name “Proteus” is from the Greek god who can take on any shape), 1932 Nobel Prize Winner Irving Langmuir, David Sarnoff (RCA corporate “General” who brought radio and television to the masses), and Albert Einstein the world famous discovered of the theory relativity. In the center is the chilling standing image Charles Proteus Steinmetz was a giant of a pioneer in the field of electrical engineering, who invented a commercially successful alternating current motor. Only four feet tall in real life, his middle name Proteus, was named after the Greek god who could take on any shape or size. GE used this photo for promotional purposes to imply a special relationship between Einstein and Nikola Tesla, who are supposedly standing next to one another (airbrushing everyone else out). It is in fact not Tesla, but John Carson an AT&T engineer. Vintage, oversized 11x14” photo came from a GE engineer by the name of Benedict who is in the photo. Photo sports a cartouche of Van Dreveer a prominent New Jersey photographer. Professional restoration to a vertical tear (beautifully done) o/w NRMT with perfect contrast. Comes with 1955 letter (TLS) from David Sarnoff on RCA stationery. Responding to the owner of this photo (his uncle S. Benedict is pictured therein) as to whether he wants a copy, Sarnoff replies, “I have in my collection the photograph to which you refer and recall the occasion very well… (signed) David Sarnoff.”
