These historic relics were born out of baseball’s “grass roots” during the 1850’s-70’s. The two lemon peel baseballs (one small and one large) are a fascinating look into the early game of baseball. These dark lemon peels were more conducive to the early practices of not wearing gloves or catchers equipment. These balls could also be thrown at the base runner in order to tag him out. The larger one, whose laces are completely intact, has two seams, which run parallel to each other and completely around the ball. The smaller one is coming apart slightly at the seams, allowing you to view the inside composition. It has 2 crossing seams which do not go completely around the ball. The trophy ball emanating from Bethlehem, Pa., dated Sept. 23, 1871 is painted white with a shield design reading, “University Bethlehem, Pa. 30-13, Sept. 23, 1871.” Paint is Excellent, although somewhat blemished on the opposite side.
