Presented is an original Yankee Stadium Mezzanine Section 4 sign that was taken directly from Yankee Stadium I by our consignor after a Yankees' game. The consignor obtained the offered sign on the final home game of the 1973 season. After the game, fans were allowed, if not assisted, in taking a piece of history. The fans were told that the stadium would be bulldozed the next day and that the section signs and other potential souvenirs just wind up on a junk pile. Some fans were assisted by ushers, as some of them carried screwdrivers and were removing the metal plate seat identifiers, charging fans a dollar or more to remove the seat identifiers. It is not known if the consigner had to pay an usher for this Mezzanine Section 4 sign. Although Section 4 in Yankee Stadium I was behind home plate, just slightly to the left of the plate, the number "4" on the offered sign brings to mind the Yankee's first, and only, #4, - the Iron Horse - Lou Gehrig.
The metal sign measures 10.8x38". The lettering and the number "4" are in white on a black background. The sign is two-sided, with each side reading, "MEZZANINE SECTION 4". The sign has two holes that enabled the sign to be hung. The hole at one side of the top is approx. 0.25" in diameter. The hole at the other side of the top seems to have become larger from when the sign was pried loose, and this hole measures approx. 0.5". The sign exhibits good use, with paint chipping, scratches, small stains, and some tiny rust spots. It is not clear when the sign first was used at Yankee Stadium I, but it was used at some point and lasted through the final game at Yankee Stadium I. The sign weighs four (4) lbs.
