William Tatem Tilden II was nicknamed "Big Bill," and the 6'2" tennis star is one of the top players in tennis history. Presented are two ticket stubs to Tilden's Tour of Japan match against Ellsworth Vines on Oct. 11, 1936, at Denen Yomiuri Stadium in Tokyo. Tilden (1895-1953) grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a wealthy family. He attended the University of Pennsylvania. The death of his mother eventually caused Tilden to concentrate on tennis as a way to handle his grief. Tilden quickly advanced in tennis rankings, and from 1920-25, he was the World's Number 1 Amateur, which at a time before a professional tour made him the World's top ranked player. From his peak years, 1920-26, Tilden won six consecutive U.S. National Singles Championships and three Wimbledon Men's Singles Titles. Among his numerous records: 10 U.S. National Finals appearances; a 42-match win streak at Forest Hills (1920-26); a 95-match win streak in 1924-25.
Tilden was an amateur tennis player from 1912-30, and a professional from 1931 until his death in 1953. The two offered ticket stubs were from a match that was a part of a 1936 Tilden-Vines Tour of Asia and the Pacific. The tour began in Honolulu, Hawaii, on September 24, 2025, and concluded at Shanghai on November 24th.
Both offered ticket stubs measure approx. 3x4", with an approx. half-inch long section removed on the lower right that was given to the ticket holder as a rain check.
