"These are the saddest of possible words: 'Tinker to Evers to Chance,'" is the opening to the poem "Baseball's Sad Lexicon," by Franklin Pierce Adams. The popular poem immortalized the Chicago Cubs' double-play combination of shortstop Joe Tinker, second baseman Johnny Evers, and first baseman Frank Chance. Presented is a 4.9x6.9" Type I Brown Brothers photo of Hall of Fame second baseman Johnny Evers, who played in the Major Leagues for the Chicago Orphans/Cubs (1902-13), Boston Braves (1914-17 & '29), Philadelphia Phillies (1917), and Chicago White Sox (1922). Evers was a very combative player whose nickname, "The Human Crab," reflected his aggressive personality. He was real lightweight, as he reportedly played his entire career at never over 130 pounds. In the famous 1908 game in which the New York Giants' baserunner Fred Merkle ran off the field at the Polo Grounds without touching second base, Evers noticed the gaffe and called for a ball at second base to put Merkle out. Eventually, the game was ruled a tie, and when it was played over, Chicago won, clinching the pennant. Evers batted .270 for his career, with only ten home runs and with 324 steals. It is believed that the aforementioned "Baseball's Sad Lexicon" was such a popular and repeated poem that it led to the 1946 Baseball Hall of Fame induction that named Tinker, Evers, and Chance to the Hall of Fame.

The offered photograph measures approx. 4.9x6.9". The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC." The photo has missing paper from each of the top corners and some black spots, mostly on the right side. The back of the photo has the stamp of famed New York Photography studio - "Brown Brothers."
