Displayed are two of the iconic Brooklyn Dodgers "Boys of Summer," Hall of Famer Roy Campanella and Carl Furillo, celebrating their roles in the Dodgers' 6-5 victory over the National League leading New York Giants at Ebbets Field on August 14, 1954. The Brooklyn win moved the Dodgers to within a game-and-a-half of the Giants. Furillo drove in four runs with his 6th inning grand slam off Ruben Gomez, and Campanella drove in the other two Brooklyn runs with a two-run single off Hoyt Wilhelm in the 7th inning. After winning NL pennants in '52 and '53, the Dodgers failed to win the pennant in '54, as the Giants won by five games. In '54, Campanella, bothered by injuries, batted only .207, with 19 home runs and 51 RBIs. Furillo batted .294 that season, with 19 home runs and 96 RBIs. The perennial refrain of Dodger fans, after losing a pennant race or a World Series was, "Wait 'til next year." The phrase was uttered numerous times by Dodger fans after seasons in the '40s and '50s, but it was unnecessary in '55, the next year after this photo, because that is the year when the Dodgers won the team's only Brooklyn World's Championship.
The 8x10" black & white photo, taken by Charles Hoff of the New York Daily News, measures approx. 8x10". The suggested slug line attached to the back of the photo reads, "Two big bats that figured in the Dodgers victory belonged to home run hitter Carl Furillo (right) and Roy Campanella. The latter's single clinched the game." The actual Daily News caption, attached on back, reads, "Dodgers Roy Campanella (left) and Carl Furillo cross their bats after Roy singled runs home and Carl hit a grand slam homer to blast league-leading Giants."
The photo has been encapsulated and certified PSA "TYPE I AUTHENTIC." The photo has a very slight fold near the lower right corner and some light wear in the margins, and it is in otherwise EXCELLENT condition.
