Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were paired together for ten full seasons on the New York Yankees, from 1925-34. Gehrig also had the proverbial cups of coffee with the Yankees before 1923, appearing in 13 games in 1921 and 10 games in 1922. Presented is the opportunity to possess a baseball that is dual-signed by Ruth and Gehrig.
With 714 lifetime home runs for Ruth and 493 for Gehrig, this Hall of Fame combination totaled an amazing 1,207 home runs in their careers. In addition, Ruth's 2,214 RBIs and Gehrig's 1,995 RBIs combine for 4,209 runs batted in. Gehrig played his entire career with the Yankees, and all but 55 of Ruth's home runs and 236 of his RBIs came with the Yankees, as The Bambino played with the Boston Red Sox at the start of his career, mostly as a terrific pitcher, and the Boston Braves, in 1935, for a half season at the end of his career. Gehrig, the Iron Horse, played in 2,130 consecutive games, the MLB record for 55 years until it was broken by Cal Ripken in 1995. For decades, Ruth was both the single season home run leader (60) and the lifetime home run leader (714). Fittingly, for such a pair of dual sluggers - who shared the middle of the Yankees batting order, with Ruth usually batting third and Gehrig hitting fourth - these Yankee immortals share the sweet spot on the offered ball.
Ruth, known for his beautiful signature, used dark blue or black fountain ink to sign his neat, flowing script on the left side of the sweet spot towards the center of the sweet spot. (As noted in the accompanying PSA LOA, Ruth's entire signature has been enhanced in an unknown hand and there is evidence of signature removals throughout the ball.) Starting at the center of the sweet spot and moving to the viewer's right, Gehrig used fountain ink to script his own neatly written signature. The Reach Official American League baseball (league president's facsimile signature no longer legible) shows wear. There are some scrapes and some small places where the outer "skin" of the ball has rubbed off. The ball exhibits a few small stains. It appears that the ball has a thin coat of shellac or similar material. The dual-signed ball comes with a PSA LOA for the signatures.
