Walter O'Malley was a Brooklyn lawyer who became the key owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Presented are two O'Malley signed, typed letters on Brooklyn Dodgers letterhead. O'Malley was the Dodgers' President when Brooklyn finally won its first, and only, World Series in 1955. When O'Malley couldn't get New York City aid and approval for a new ballpark in downtown Brooklyn to replace Ebbets Field, O'Malley engineered the Dodgers' move to Los Angeles following the 1957 season.
The letters: 1) A July 31, 1951, letter from O'Malley to a "Mr. Charles Hedge" of Brooklyn, New York. O"Malley wrote, in part: Dear Charles, Of course you may use my name as a reference.... Would you want me to give you a letter to Mr. Paul Carey of the Carey Cadillac Service. With Best Regards, Yours very truly. Walter O'Malley." 2) The other signed O'Malley letter was another missive to Mr. Charles Hedge, this one dated Oct. 17, 1955, close to when the Dodgers won the team's 1955 World Series against the New York Yankees. O'Malley wrote to Charles Hedge at "New York Hospital/H. Bldg, Room 518/525 East 68th Street, New York, New York." O'Malley wrote, "Dear Mr. Hedge: Of all the telegrams we received I was particularly happy to have the one from you. John would have had quite a time for himself had he been with us. Best wishes to you. Sincerely, Walter." Apparently, Charles Hedge was congratulating O'Malley and the Dodgers on the team's historic win. The letterhead used in this letter has a photo of the 1955 World Champions and states, in red, "Brooklyn's FIRST World Champ." Both letters measure approx. 8.5x11". Each letter has folds where it was folded for mailing. Both letters are in overall EXCELLENT condition.
