"You don't necessarily have to write to be a poet," said Bob Dylan. Some people work in gas stations and they're poets. I don't call myself a poet because I don't like the word. I'm a trapeze artist." Presented is a Bob Dylan signed and inscribed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction program page from Dylan's induction year (1988). Dylan is a singer-guitarist-songwriter, and despite the aforementioned Dylan protests to the contrary, also a poet. Born as Robert Allen Zimmerman in 1941, Dylan is the name he adopted as his stage name, supposedly basing it as a tribute to the poet Dylan Thomas. Dylan left his native Minnesota to move to Greenwich Village in New York City in 1961 to be involved in the folk music scene. He is still performing, and he has been a part of popular music for almost seven decades. Dylan's original songs often confronted philosophical and social issues, and his lyrics were more sophisticated than most popular music at the time. His debut album was simply called Bob Dylan, and his popularity quickly grew with the burgeoning counterculture of the time. Dylan was an avid admirer of Woody Guthrie. Dylan's songs "Blowin' in the Wind" (1963) and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" (1964) became essentially theme songs for the growing civil rights and anti-war movements.
Dylan has sold an estimated 125 million records worldwide. In addition to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he has been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has won an Academy Award, Ten Grammy Awards, and a Golden Globe. Once again countering Dylan's perhaps ironic claim that he is not a poet, the songwriter was in 2016 awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, "...for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition."
The offered Dylan signed program (page 11) features a lengthy Dylan bio and a small image of him playing his guitar. The image is signed and inscribed by Dylan in blue ink. Dylan wrote, "To Pete, Good luck, Bob Dylan." The page is double-matted to 12x16". The offering is in really fine condition. The offering comes with a PSA LOA for the signature.
