Urban "Red" Faber was a Hall of Fame righthander, a legal spitballer, and an innocent member of the infamous 1919 Chicago Black Sox. Presented is a Red Faber signed and inscribed index card. Faber played his entire Major League career (1914-33) with the Chicago White Sox. He had a lifetime 254-213 record, with a career 3.15 ERA. Faber was a key hurler on the 1917 White Sox World Champions, and he still holds an MLB all-time record for the most decisions (4) in history, achieved in that '17 Classic when he went 3-1. Faber missed most of the 1918 season when he was serving in the United States Navy during World War I. He lost significant weight in the service, and in 1919 he developed arm problems and had a case of influenza, possibly part of the often-lethal "Spanish Flu" pandemic that season. Thus, the arm injury and his illness caused him to miss the 1919 World Series. Ray Shalk, the famous honest catcher on the Black Sox, stated that had [honest] Red Faber been available to pitch in the '19 World Series that the White Sox, despite the fixers, never would have lost the Series. After the spitball was banned in 1920, 17 MLB pitchers who were already known for using the pitch were allowed to continue to use the pitch for the remainder of their career. Faber made good use of his exemption, and pitched 13 more seasons, achieving success on the White Sox, who lost many of their stars because of their involvement in the 1919 fix.
The signed and inscribed blank index card measures 3x5". Faber, using a ballpoint pen, neatly wrote: To Bob/C.C. "Red" Faber." The card has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified "AUTHENTIC AUTO." The card is in EXCELLENT condition.
