Rare Ray Chapman display piece that may have been issued in memoriam following his tragic death in 1920. The cardboard display features a portrait image of Chapman in the center, with his image bordered by a black square. Chapman's name is printed directly below. Interestingly, this piece originates from Bill Reidy, who was a scout for the Cleveland Naps following his playing career with the Giants, Superbas, and Browns from 1896 to 1904. It was discovered at the same estate sale that featured the 1914 Cleveland Naps team-signed baseball with Joe Jackson, which is offered elsewhere in this auction. Ray Chapman's death in 1920 from a pitched baseball remains the only on-field Major League fatality in the history of the game. The display (9x11") has heavy creasing throughout, as well as a pinhole at both the top and bottom borders, and minor staining. Fair to Good condition overall.
