Walter Hagen was known as the "father of golf." Displayed is a group of seven original, from the camera negative golf photos, each measuring 3.9x4.9", involving a tournament at the Presidio in which Hagen was involved. Hagen is in one of the negative photos.  Born in 1892, Hagen grew up in Rochester, New York. He became a dedicated caddy and learned the game from a local golf professional. He turned professional at age 19. Hagen won 11 major tournaments, third behind Jack Nicklaus (18) and Tiger Woods (15). He won a pair of U.S. Opens and a record tying five PGA Championships. Hagen made extensive exhibition tours, earning more from the exhibitions than he did from official play. Yet, his earnings from tournament play made him the first golfer to earn a million dollars from play. Hagen professed that he "never wanted to become a millionaire - only to live like one." on Jan. 23, 1935, by Murry Fay for the San Francisco Examiner newspaper.

The seven original camera negatives were taken at the Presidio in California. The negatives: 1) Hagen and Richard Arlin, each in a tie and jacket, posed with golf clubs; 2) & 3) Olin Dutra and Paul Runyan putting - a different shot, but this negative has spotting; 4) Craig Wood; 5) Olin Dutra swinging; 6) Olin Dutra swinging - a different shot; 7) Craig Wood. The shots come in the original envelope, with a tear, some darkening, and much wear on the envelope. In part, typing on the envelope reads, "Sports. Golf. Presidio. Jan. 1935. Walter Hagen. /Olin Dutra; Paul Runyan; Craig Wood; Richard Arlin." All but the second Dutra-Runyan negative photo (with spotting) are EX-MT.
