Oakland A's alternate jersey (used both at home and on the road) dating from the 1969 season. The green-mist vest-style flannel jersey features the "A's" logo on the left breast and the number "36" on the right breast and reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in green on gold tackle twill. Located on the left front tail are a "McAuliffe" label, a "69" year tag, and a "46" size tag. A Major League Baseball "100th Anniversary" patch (worn by every Major League club in 1969) adorns the left breast, directly below the number. The "A's" logo on the left breast has been restored and there is reinforced stitching to the reverse number. Aside from those anomalies, the jersey is original as issued and displays moderate wear.
Both Joe Rudi and Tito Francona wore number "36" for the A's in 1969 and it is almost a certainty that each player wore this uniform during the season. Rudi began the 1969 season in the minors, but was called up in June and remained with the A's until August 4th, when he was sent down again. He did not return to the A's until September. Francona was acquired by the A's in a trade with the Atlanta Braves on August 22nd. Rudi almost certainly wore number "36" during his time with the club from June to August 4th. When Francona joined the club, he was given the number "36." Upon Rudi's return in September, he was given number "26," which he wore for the remainder of his career with Oakland. As such, this an extremely early Joe Rudi jersey, dating from just his third season in the Majors. Rudi appeared in thirty-five games in 1969, batting .189 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI. The following season he cracked the starting lineup and became one of the club's top players, leading the club to three consecutive World Championships from 1972 through 1974. Rudi retired in 1982 with 179 home runs, 810 RBI, and a .264 lifetime average.
