James "Sleepy Jim" Crowley was the left halfback in Notre Dame's famed Four Horseman backfield. Presented is a Jim Crowley signed and inscribed index card. Iconic sportswriter Grantland Rice, in the most famous lede in sports reporting history, thrust Crowley and the others into immortality when he penned, after a defeat of Army by Notre Dame at West Point: "Outlined against a blue-gray sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as Famine, Pestilence, Death and Destruction. These are only aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden." Crowley was from Green Bay, Wisconsin, and his high school football coach was the famous Curly Lambeau, of Green Bay Packer fame. At Notre Dame, Crowley and the other Four Horseman had a three-year record of 27-2-1. They were undefeated in 1924, and they beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl, thus earning a National Championship. The 5'11", 162 lbs. Crowley was hard-nosed, despite his lack of size, and College Hall of Fame coach Knute Rockne said Crowley was "the nerviest back I've ever seen." Crowley briefly played professional football and was successful as a college head coach at both Michigan State and Fordham, and later he was the first commissioner of the professional All-American Football Conference. He passed away on January 15, 1986, the last of the Four Horsemen.
