Displayed is an August 3, 1974, Kodak color photograph of Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Joe DiMaggio, and Casey Stengel. The photo was signed by Mantle, Berra, Ford, and DiMaggio, with Stengel's signature being inconclusive. The photograph was taken on the occasion of the 1974 Yankee Old-Timers Day, but since Yankee Stadium was under renovation, the Old-Timers Game was held at the Yankees' temporary home in exile, Shea Stadium. In eleven days from the date of the photo, Mantle and Ford would be inducted into Cooperstown. At the time of the photo, Mantle was 43 years old, and Ford was 46; Berra was 49, DiMaggio was 59, and Stengel was 84. The five Yankees in the photo made a habit of winning the World Series. Berra (10), DiMaggio (9), Mantle (7), Ford (6), and Stengel (2). Casey, by-the-way, added 7 more World Series crowns as a manager. Look carefully at Stengel's cap. Not exactly averse to clowning during his career (Stengel as a player once gave fans "the bird" by having a bird fly out of his cap as he theatrically doffed it). Although many of the logos on his cap are not visible, Casey has a cap on with numerous team logos representing teams for whom he has played or managed. Casey played for five teams: New York Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Boston Bees, and he managed the Brooklyn Dodgers, Boston Bees/Braves, New York Yankees, and New York Mets.
The photo measures approx. 8x10". The signatures were all neatly scripted with a black, felt tip marker. As for Stengel's signature, the story is that the Stengel's signature was obtained in-person in 1975, but JSA has deemed it inconclusive due to limited exemplars from that year. There was a limited window of availability since the photo was taken a year before his death. The multi-signed photo comes with a JSA LOA. In part, this LOA states, "After an exhaustive search trying to locate exemplars of Casey Stengel, we feel compelled to judge this signature as inconclusive. Stengel's 1974 autograph version shows no sign of tremor, but his death on September 29, 1975 allows a viable possibility." The signatures rate 9/10. The photo is in EXCELLENT condition.
