In 1964, at the apex of Beatlemania, the Beatles starred in the hit film A Hard Day's Night. Presented is a '64 United Artists Paul McCartney black & white publicity photo for a movie that became both a critical and a box office hit. McCartney, known to many as"'the cute Beatle," started playing in his home city of Liverpool, England, at age 15, with The Quarrymen, the forerunner of a group that later became The Beatles. Primarily a bass guitarist, McCartney and John Lennon were the principal songwriters for the Beatles. McCartney's compositions include And I Love Her, Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, and Blackbird. With Lennon, McCartney co-wrote such hits as I Saw Her Standing There, She Loves You, I Want to Hold Her Hand, and Can't Buy Me Love. The movie A Hard Day's Night shares its title with the hit Beatles song, primarily written by Lennon and credited to both Lennon and McCartney. A musical comedy, the movie follows The Beatles as almost a faux documentary, as for 36 hours they travel and prepare for a television appearance. Many commentators and critics thought the film was a biting satire on Beatlemania and the Beatles themselves as the band becomes almost imprisoned into their hotel rooms and train cars by the demands of their fame. The movie, directed by Richard Lester, was nominated for two Academy Awards. Even more than 60 years after the filming of A Hard Day's Night, Paul McCartney continues his musical career.
The offered photo measures 8x10". It depicts a very young-looking McCartney, his thumb in his mouth. Machine printed on front: "THE BEATLES in A HARD DAY'S NIGHT/Produced by Walter Shenson/Released by United Artists. The photo is marked in the lower right corner as "HDN-ART-2." Also, in the lower right corner, the photo is machine numbered as 64/261. On back are three Brown Brothers photographers' stamps and "Paul McCartney" scripted in pen, by an unknown hand. The photograph has a few tiny folds at the top, mostly in the margin, but the photo is in overall EXCELLENT condition.
