Displayed is a 1950s Type II photo of notorious American gangster Mickey Cohen. Born as Meyer Harris Cohen in Brooklyn, New York, in 1913, Mickey, as a child, moved with his family to Los Angeles. He sold newspapers on the streets of L.A. and later was sent to reform school for crimes such as shoplifting and theft. As a young man, he was a boxer, with an 8-8-5 record, two of his wins by knockout. Moving to Chicago, he became an associate of Mattie Capone, younger brother of Al Capone, and he became an enforcer for the Chicago mob. Later, he was an associate of Bugsy Siegel in Las Vegas. Cohen served numerous stretches in prison, including Alcatraz. He died in 1976 of complications from an operation from stomach cancer.

The offered black & white photo measures approx. 11x14". The imaginative photo pose has a dapper Cohen sitting on a chair surrounded by newspaper clippings of his crime exploits.  On back, written in pencil by an unknown hand: "3081/Cr. Edward Clark/Pg 119." Also, written on back in blue pencil by an unknown hand: "Cr. Ed Clark/Gangster Mickey Cohen & his clippings....1950." A small tag on back reads, "Time Inc. Picture Collection." There is a small fold in the lower left margin and slight corner wear in the lower. Overall, the Type II photo is in nice condition, and the photo set-up, with Cohen in the center of news of his crime career, makes for a novel photo.
