Willie Mays H&B Pro-Model ("K55") bat used by Mays in the 1957 All-Star Game. Graded GU 8 by PSA. This is the earliest Willie Mays game-used All-Star bat we have ever offered and we cannot recall having seen another from a prior mid-summer classic. (The first of Mays' nineteen consecutive All-Star Game appearance was in 1954, so there are only a few Mays All-Star Game bats that can possibly pre date the offered bat.) It's All-Star pedigree is confirmed by the stampings on the barrel, which read "All Star Game/Mays/St. Louis 1957." The bat, which is uncracked, measures 35 inches and weighs 33.4 ounces. Light use (as expected for an All-Star Game bat) is displayed in the form of a few ball marks on the right barrel, as well as blue and green rack streaks.
In the July 12, 1957, All-Star Game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis before 30,693, Mays went 2-for 4, with a single and run scored in the 7th inning and a triple off Billy Pierce to score Stan Musial in the bottom of the 9th inning before Willie scored on a wild pitch. The American League, behind Jim Bunning of the Detroit Tigers, won the game 6-5, with the Philadelphia Phillies' Curt Simmons taking the loss.
Willie Mays is considered by a large number of baseball aficionados as the greatest baseball player of all-time. The Hall of Fame center fielder passed away in 2024, but 70 years before that, his sensational over-the-shoulder grab in the '54 World Series in deep center field at the Polo Grounds in New York against the Cleveland Indians is so amazing that it is still referred to simply as "The Catch," and the Giants went on to sweep Cleveland for the '54 World Championship. Mays played for 22 Major League seasons: 1951-52 & 1954-72 as a New York/San Francisco Giant and 1972-73 as a New York Met. The epitome of a "5-tool" player, Mays batted a lifetime .302 with 660 home runs, 300 steals, and 12 Gold Gloves. Full LOA from PSA (graded GU 8).
