Presented is a turn-of-the-Century (circa 1900) "basket ball" broadside, from back in the day when the sport was still spelled as two words. The 5.75x8" broadside is printed on paper from the REPORTER PRESS, of Springfield, Vermont. The broadside was posted and/or handed out, and it advertised a split game doubleheader in Springfield, Vermont. The verbiage reads, "Friday Night/Town Hall/TWO - GAMES - TWO/BASKET BALL/Y.M.C.U. FIRST TEAM vs. BRATTLEBORO HIGH SCHOOL/Y.M.C.U. SECOND TEAM/STORE CLERKS SPRINGFIELD/ADMISSION 20c and 25c/8 0'clock/REPORTER PRESS, Springfield, Vt." Back in the turn-of-the-Century era, members of the Unitarian Faith were not allowed in the YMCA, then a religious organization, so the Y.M.C.U. was created as an organization to which Unitarians could belong. The advertised Springfield, Vermont, game was held at not too far a train trip from Springfield, Massachusetts, where Dr. James Naismith invented basketball at the YMCA International Training School in 1891. Written in pencil by an unknown hand are the numbers "37" and "23," most likely signaling that the Y.M.C.U. First Team defeated Brattleboro High School by 37-22. The broadside has a stain in the upper left corner, a fold in the upper right corner, and some minor darkening because of the passage of approx. 125 years. The broadside is a great remembrance from the truly vintage days of basketball.
